Leftover Valentine’s party decor? Don’t toss it. Turn it into learning!


Those heart-shaped table scatter pieces, rose petals, and little gems can become hands-on, meaningful activities that build fine motor skills, early literacy, and early math — all while keeping the festive fun going a little longer.


Here are three simple ways we used ours:


1. Pair It with a Book

One of my favorite ways to extend a holiday theme is by pairing it with a story.


We read There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose and created a simple “feeding” activity to go along with it. I attached a picture of the old lady to an open water bottle and let the kids use tweezers and tongs to feed her hearts and diamond-shaped table scatter.


This activity works on:

Fine motor strength

Hand-eye coordination

Story retelling

Listening skills


It’s playful, silly, and incredibly engaging. Plus, using tools like tweezers adds an extra challenge that strengthens those little hands for writing later on.

2. Color Sorting Sensory Bin

Sensory bins never get old. Especially when they’re themed.


We filled a bin with red and pink rose petals, hearts, and gems, then added simple sorting cards labeled “red” and “pink.” The kids sorted the pieces by color, talked about what they noticed, and explored textures along the way.


This activity builds:

Early math skills

Color recognition

Vocabulary

Sensory exploration


You can make this structured with sorting mats or keep it open-ended and let them explore freely.


3. Build & Trace Letters

Table scatter is perfect for building letters!

Place the pieces along tracing lines to form letters, spell LOVE, or even practice your child’s name. We lined up the hearts to build letters and then traced them for extra reinforcement.


This activity supports:

Letter recognition

Name practice

Fine motor control

Pre-writing skills


It’s hands-on learning that feels like play (which is exactly how early learning should be.)
